In 2012, Mercedes Benz had made it official that the brand is readying an all-new crossover based on the new MFA platform which underpins the latest-gen A-Class and the B-Class. To be called the GLA, this upcoming model is Mercedes’ first small SUV and is based on the concept GLA, shown at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier during the year.
Designed to take on the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1 in the compact crossover segment, the GLA is based on Mercedes’ Modular Front-drive Architecture like the A-Class, however, it will be significantly bigger in size than the latter to offer improved space and comfort. Under the hood, the GLA will be powered by a range of A-Class-derived 4 cylinder petrol and diesel engines mated to Mercedes’ 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic gearbox. The car will also be offered with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
The Mercedes GLA will go on sale in early 2014 in Europe, priced around £5,000 more than the A-Class, which starts at £20,370 (Rs 19.07 lakh).
