Mahindra & Mahindra has revealed that it will showcase a new luxurious SUV at the Auto Expo 2018 in a new teaser video. This new SUV is expected to be the new generation SsangYong Rexton, however, the SUV will be badged as a Mahindra car in India. The decision to rebrand the Rexton as a Mahindra product is said to be because of the lower brand recall for SsangYong in India. That said, the company will retain the ‘Rexton’ nameplate and the SUV is expected to be launched as the Mahindra Rexton . The decision to change the branding is a result of lower brand recall for SsangYong. Moreover, building the brand ground up will need substantial investment and time. That said, the India-spec Rexton will be every bit the same car that’s on sale in the international market. The flagship SUV will be positioned above the Mahindra XUV500 with all the bells and whistles to compete against the competition. The Mahindra Rexton will compete against the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Isuzu MU-X and the Skoda Kodiaq. In terms of design, the Mahindra Rexton will be largely similar to the international model. Changes will be limited to certain exterior bits to provide the car with the Mahindra ‘family’ look. Design changes could come in the form of new grille with vertical slots and Mahindra badging and different alloy wheel design. On the interior front, Mahindra might offer a slightly different trim to keep the prices in check. The company plans to price the SUV around INR 4 lakh lower than the Toyota Fortune and a lot will depend on what features the company offers on the India-spec Rexton. That said, the Mahindra Rexton XUV700 is expected to be priced around INR 24 lakh (ex-showroom), while launch will take place during the festive period (October 2018).
