Suzuki recently unveiled the new generation of its Suzuki Wagon R and Stingray tall-boy hatchbacks in Japan, marking the biggest updates to the two models since their launch. Meanwhile, the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is also on its way to India. It is not yet clear whether the design and styling seen in the new Wagon R will translate to what we get in India. The Japan launch comes within a month of the brochure images being leaked. The new Suzuki Stingray and Wagon R both get entirely new design language, and design is one of the biggest USPs here. Both models are highly quirky in styling, with a big emphasis on their tall-boy stance.
Suzuki Wagon R
Let s start with the Suzuki Wagon R. Up front, the first thing that one would notice in the new-generation Wagon R is the new grille with strong chrome bits and square headlights. The bumper is also all new and gets a big air dam. The hood is shorter now as well, when compared to the current Wagon R. The Suzuki Stingray, meanwhile, has an edgier design, as seen its hood, angular headlights and two-part front grille. The front bumper is also more muscular and gets a trapezoid-shaped air dam flanked by vertical fog lamp areas. Move the sides, and the two cars look more like vans with their odd B-pillars. The wheel arches are muscular, and their outward angle is accentuated by the character line above. The Stingray gets better alloy wheels, chrome door handles and improved side skirts when compared to the Wagon R. Move towards the rear, and the design s outlandishness dives down to conventional Suzuki standards. The rear windshield is large, and the taillights are horizontally mounted. Suzuki Wagon R interior
Inside, the Suzuki Wagon R and Stingray get a new instrument clustered at the centre of a newly-designed dashboard. There is a touch-screen infotainment system positioned below the cluster, and vertical air-conditioning vents are positioned along the dash. The gear lever is also placed at the base end of the dash. The difference between the Wagon R and Stingray here is that the former gets a beige colour scheme while the latter comes in black with a splash of red. Suzuki has launched the Wagon R and Stingray in two hybrid variants as well, but do not expect that one to come to India. The conventional models get a 660 cc, inline three-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 51 bhp of power and 60 Nm of torque. With all that said, Maruti Suzuki is not likely to bring these cars to India anytime soon, at least not until 2018.
