The new generation Alto will be lighter, faster and a lot more fuel-efficient too than the existing model range. Under the hood, the car will sport a new 658cc engine instead of the current 796cc engine. Moreover the engine will come in two states of power – 57.3 PS while the turbo version will produce about 62.9 PS. The new Alto is expected to return a striking fuel efficiency of 32kmpl and will also comes with an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) gearbox. The price of the new Alto will be around INR 3 – 4.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
According to sources, the company is planning an aggressive product strategy for the Indian market to tackle the growing entry level market. This is exactly why Maruti is now working on improving its top-selling car in India the 'Alto'.
Reports indicate the biggest competition to Maruti Alto is likely to come from French carmaker Renault’s upcoming small car KWID. The Renault KWID has been designed to offer stylish and aggressive exteriors and comfortable and well-equipped interiors. Under the hood the KWID will offer a 1.0-litre petrol engine paired to an AMT gearbox along with a 50.7 PS 800cc petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. In all means this makes the KWID a better option that the Alto 800.
To gain an upper hand over such an upcoming competitor and at the same time keep the Alto series updated in regards to latest market demands, Maruti will introduce the new diesel variant of Alto powered by a two-cylinder 800cc diesel engine developed by Suzuki. The Alto Diesel will be launched in India by late 2015 or early 2016.
