Renault plans to make India the exclusive manufacturing hub for their right hand drive sports utility vehicle ‘Duster’. The company intends to maximize its market share in the growing Indian car market and is planning to launch five vehicles between May 2011 and the end of 2012. Renault is taking full advantage of the low development and manufacturing costs here, as they are pleased with the cost-effective and high-quality supplies from the Indian vendors. The Duster is mainly designed for the Indian market and will be positioned as an entry-level SUV with a price tag of Rs 8 – 10 lakh. The SUV will be powered by 1.5-litre dCi diesel and 1.6-litre petrol engines and will be positioned in competition with M&M Scorpio. The same vehicle will be exported to the UK with Dacia badging and some cosmetic changes; the company will also consider exports to South Africa in a short while. Renault has a joint facility with Nissan near Chennai, at Oragadam, and recently launched their SUV Koleos in India.
