When Tata Motors entered the market with Nano with a modest price target of around INR 1 lakh, it hoped the car will perfectly fit the market and would be a hit. Sadly being projected as ‘world’s cheapest car’ did not work out very well with new time buyers as it failed to inculcate the pride of ownership. Even with after considerable upgrades and facelifts the Nano failed to achieve the impression it desired. And with this new car Tata hopes achieve that space in the entry level car segment. According to reports this new car will be manufactured in Tata’s Sanand plant, in Gujarat.
Even though there are no specific updates regarding the engine specifications for Pelican, Tata will most likely not avoid the two-cylinder 800cc diesel developed by Bosch India. We are expecting to see a 1.0-litre petrol engine and 0.8-litre engine that was originally developed for the Nano but could not make it to production.
As it is expected to be placed above the Nano, Tata Pelican is likely to be priced from INR 2.5 lakhs onwards. Sources say Tata Motors executives are refusing to “comment on any such future plans.” As for the launch date we can expect a late 2016 release.
