Tata TAMO Racemo sports car production put on hold

To be country's first endogenously developed sportscar, the Tata Motors Racemo was said to fall around the price tag of INR 22 lakh.

Showcased at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show with much oomph and wow, Tata Motors mid-engined Racemo sportscar is believed not to make it to production, with the entire project being shelved for good. A report published in Autocar India magazine, states that the top level management at Tata Motors has decided that Racemo project is not monetarily viable. The total cost to the company, for the entire Racemo project has been evaluated at INR 250 crores, an amount which the company management is not willing to spend. Instead, it was suggested that the same amount could be used to bringing Tata Motor’s commercial vehicle division on track. That said, no official confirmation exists from Tata Motors themselves. Talking about the Tata Motors TaMo Racemo, the same was a first take on a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sportscar by the homegrown automaker. Launched under Tata Motors new TaMo division, it was speculated that the Racemo will make it to the Indian shores by the year 2018. To be country’s first endogenously developed sportscar, the Tata Motors Racemo was said to fall around the price tag of INR 22 lakh. The Tata TaMo Racemo is based on the automaker’s MoFlex MMS (Multi-Material Sandwich) structure. The car has been developed at Tata Motor’s design studios in Turin, Italy. With an aim of keeping the prices of the Racemo as low as possible, use of exotic materials, like that of Carbon fibre was avoided. Power to the Racemo comes from a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The engine is capable of churning out 186Bhp along with 210Nm of peak torque. Tata Motors announced the launch of it’s sub-brand, Tamo, for faster production of niche products, like the Racemo. For Racemo, Tata Motors had tied up with Microsoft to introduce the car with a number of connected vehicle technologies. These are to include a few like cloud computing, analytics, geo-spatial and mapping.
