Spied on test in Bangalore, this is Skoda’s upcoming 2013 Octavia probably doing one of its initial test runs on Indian roads. Although at first glance the car looks almost identical to the European Rapid, closer inspection at the rear-end design shows that it is indeed the 2013 Octavia.
The 2013 Octavia is Skoda’s first model to make use of Volkswagen’s MQB platform which offers significant production cost savings. Also, this new model is bigger and yet, lighter than the Laura that is currently on sale. While the European-spec model can be had with engine options including 1.2 and 1.4-litre TSI petrol engines besides 1.6 and 2-litre TDI diesel units, Skoda India is likely to retain the same petrol and diesel engines (albeit with some upgrades) powering the Laura.
Very little information is available yet about the launch date, but we expect the 2013 Octavia to hit the showrooms before the end of this year. Overseas though, the car is already on sale. Also, it is been said that Skoda India could bring back the ‘Octavia’ model name, after the first generation model got phased out in 2010.
