
According to Mr. Winterkorn with the launch of a new budget brand, the company will be able to further increase the outreach of the Volkswagen both in the developed and growing markets. In his interview he also mentioned that, “We will bring a budget-car family to market in 2018, with an SUV, saloon and hatchback.”
While the details are still sketchy, it is believed that Volkswagen be manufacturing its budget cars in China. Initially the brand will be launched in China and later target other emerging automotive markets around the world. The potential markets for the new brand will likely include India, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Baltic region.
The new budget brand will be the thirteenth unit to be launched under the Volkswagen Group. While initially it was believed that these new vehicles will be launched under the price segment of EUR 6000 – 8000 (INR 4.5 – 5.67 lakh), as per the new information the vehicle will be priced in the range of EUR 8000 – 11000 (INR 5.68 – 7.81 Lakhs).
The cheapest car is Volkswagen India’s current Indian line-up is the Polo, which comes at a staring price of INR 5.33 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). With the launch of a new budget brand, Volkswagen will not only be able compete with the likes of Maruti Alto and Hyundai i10 but also sustain the premium images of the Volkswagen brand.
