Volkswagen Polo facelift with 1.5-litre diesel engine to launch in May 2014

Volkswagen India is going to great lengths to ensure one of its best selling models – the Polo hatchback continues to sell in big numbers, despite the rising competition from rival brands including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Ford.

The Polo has already bred the rugged-looking Cross Polo and the turbocharged GT TSI petrol. And just today, Volkswagen launched the powerful yet fuel efficient GT TDI diesel version of the Polo. But the German carmaker is not about to stop there as there will also be a facelifted Polo with a new 1.5-litre diesel engine which will be launched in May next year.

According to a report from Autocar India, Volkswagen is preparing a facelift for the Polo which will hit the showrooms in May next year. Very little changes are expected for both the exterior and the interior. Although the report says the facelifted model will come with more equipment.

The talking point though is the new 1.5-litre diesel engine which will benefit from lower excise duty for diesel-powered small cars. This new engine is basically a downsized version of the 1.6-litre TDI unit powering the Vento and now the Polo GT TDI. The report also says that the 1.5-litre engine will be offered with two power outputs – 90PS and 105PS, meaning it will replace the existing 1.2-litre and 1.6-litre units.
