Mahindra Introduces Next-Gen Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Battery Hub

New Delhi: Mahindra has inaugurated a cutting-edge manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant, marking a significant step forward in India’s electric vehicle (EV) production. This state-of-the-art hub, situated within the company’s expansive 2.83 square kilometer Chakan facility, is one of the largest greenfield EV projects in the country. Notably, the plant operates with a strong commitment to sustainability, being water-positive and powered entirely by renewable energy sources.

As part of its substantial ₹16,000 crore investment plan for the FY22-FY27 period, Mahindra has allocated ₹4,500 crore towards its EV initiatives, encompassing powertrain development, product design, software, and the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities. The new facility showcases a sophisticated automated ecosystem, featuring over 1,000 robots and multiple automated transfer systems, ensuring the highest levels of efficiency and quality. Recognizing the importance of skill development, the plant has set a target of 25% gender diversity, fostering an inclusive and forward-thinking workforce.

The EV plant, spanning 88,000 square meters, boasts an AI-driven Body Shop, a highly automated Press Shop, and one of India’s most advanced robotic Paint Shops. Over 500 robots in the Body Shop are operated and monitored through an IoT-based “Nerve Center,” providing real-time insights and enabling end-to-end traceability. The facility also seamlessly integrates Industry 4.0 technologies, such as Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), optimizing material handling and streamlining manufacturing processes.
