Two weeks back, we had reported that Maruti Suzuki could roll out its new Alto 800 in the Indian market on September 15, as tipped off by one of our sources close to the company. However it so turned out that, the event held on September 15 in New Delhi was a presentation for company dealers. Now however, according to an article posted on Wall Street Journal, the new people's car the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is scheduled to grace the showrooms on October 16 – ahead of Diwali celebrations.
Based on the current Alto platform, the new model will be positioned between the Maruti 800 and the Alto K10, thus replacing the 800cc model of the current Alto. The new model is expected to carry a sub-Rs 2 lakh price tag and at that price point, the Alto 800 would have easily distanced itself from the current Alto K10 range by close to Rs 40,000 and inched closer to the Tata Nano category.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 will be powered by the same 796cc three-cylinder engine from the Alto, which has been tweaked to giver higher mileage and meet the emission norms. The model will be offered in three variants – petrol, diesel and CNG. The CNG variant is likely to cost Rs 30,000 more than the regular variants.
