The Ford EcoSport may have just been unveiled in a concept form – but the fact that the production version is coming soon, has gotten all the other carmakers running helter-skelter for developing a product to compete in this new compact-SUV genre. So when the race is on, how can one expect the largest carmaker in India to stay behind?
Our sources close to Maruti Suzuki now tell us that MSIL is indeed developing a compact SUV. The interesting bit, however, is that this upcoming compact-SUV will be based on the Alto platform. The thought behind this vehicle is simple – the consumers looking for a compact-SUV aren’t exactly looking for space; they are in fact fascinated by the commanding driving position. Therefore, Maruti Suzuki aims at squeezing more juice out of the ageing Alto platform by building a high-rise crossover around it. Since the platform has already paid its returns to the carmaker, the Alto-based SUV will be priced very competitively. We are told that a price tag of less than Rs 4-lakh is possible – making it the cheapest SUV in the world!
On the engine front too, the Alto-based SUV will compete with the EcoSport neck-to-neck. While the Ford EcoSport is expected to get a 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine producing over 120 PS of power, the Alto-based SUV will get a 1.0-litre K-series petrol engine with variable valve timing. Unlike the Ford motor though, the Alto-based SUV’s motor will be a naturally aspirated one. A bloke close to MSIL tells us that this SUV will offer the audible pleasure of a naturally aspirated engine, which the whistle of the Ford EcoBoost’s puny turbocharger won’t be able to match. Well, we’ll believe ‘em only after we see and hear the Alto-based SUV.
