India's largest selling small car, Maruti Suzuki Alto has won the title of the best-selling small car in the world for the second consecutive time in 2011, leaving behind the likes of Volkswagen and Fiat. Maruti Suzuki sold over 3,11,367 units of the small car in the country and is the only small car in the world to have crossed the 3,00,000 sales figure mark.
“Despite the slowdown in the domestic industry, Alto numbers have grown over the last year.” said Mayank Pareek, managing executive officer, marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. “There are cheaper cars available and newer players have entered this segment but Alto remains the car that India needs. Very safely, we will see double-digit growth for the car in 2012.” Pareek added.
In the sales chart, Maruti Suzuki Alto was followed by Volkswagen Golf, which achieved sales figure of 293,454 in Brazil and Fiat Uno, which sold 273,537 units in Brazil in 2011. The fourth spot was secured once again by Volkswagen Golf but in the German market with total sales of 258,059 units.
Maruti Suzuki Alto is the only car from India to be featured in the top five best-selling small car list, which is usually dominated by cars sold in Brazil. Apart from Maruti Suzuki Alto's solid performance, it was the Fiat Uno in Brazil that grew the fastest during the year 2011, displacing Volkswagen Golf in Germany from the number three spot.
