Maruti Suzuki Launches Country's first diesel hybrid Ciaz: Here are the other available options in the market
Maruti Suzuki India today launched the new Ciaz smart diesel hybrid in India priced at INR 8.23 – 10.17 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Touted to be the country’s first smart hybrid, the new Ciaz in backed by company’s Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) and returns a striking fuel efficiency of 28.09 kmpl. As for competition though the Ciaz SHVS doesn’t have a direct contender, it is still accompanied in the Indian market by other hybrid/electric vehicles from Mahindra Reva to BMW i8.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz smart hybrid majorly remain unchanged, mechanically the car sees some drastic changes. It is powered by the same 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine but now comes paired to the SHVS technology that brings it to the league of hybrids in India. The engine is capable of producing a peak power of 89.7 PS and 200 Nm of peak torque, while paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The car also comes with the company’s new regenerative breaking system and start/stop technology, which enable the car to offer a class leading mileage of 28.09 kmpl.

Mahindra Reva e2o:
INR 5.96 – 7.19 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
The Mahindra Reva e2o is the country’s all electric car and the first one to be introduced in the Indian car market. While in terms of design the Reva e2o might not be as stylish as its peers and also the smallest car in India, the car is attractive in its own way and is the perfect choice for a first time electric or hybrid car buyer. The Reva e2o is powered by a 48V maintenance-free Lithium-ion battery, which churns out about 25bhp and 53Nm of torque. It's not too quick, and offers a top-speed of only 81Kmph. On a full charge the car can cover a distance of 120 km.
Toyota Camry Hybrid:
INR 31.19 lakh
Toyota has been one of the most enthusiastic carmaker in India to bring in hybrid cars and expand its reach. The most recent hybrid offering from the carmakers was the new 2015 Camry Hybrid that was launched earlier this year. As for its powerplant the 2015 Camry hybrid is powered by a 2.5-litre, In-line four petrol engine along with a 650 V Electric Motor that churns out a combined power output of 205 PS and a maximum torque of 270 Nm. The Hybrid gets an e-CVT (Electronically-Controlled Continuously Variable) transmission and electronic fuel injection system.
Toyota Prius:
INR 38.10 – 39.80 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)
The first hybrid car to enter the Indian car market and world’s largest production model hybrid car, the Toyota Prius is a true blue hybrid car. The car runs on both petrol and electricity making it the perfect combination of performance and sustainability. Under the hood the Toyota Prius is powered by a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE, 4-cylinder, inline, twin-cam petrol engine that puts out 98.3 PS and 142Nm of torque. It also gets a sealed Ni-MH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) battery which increases the total power output to 135.9 PS and a fuel efficiency of 23.91 kmpl. The Prius is offered in three models EV (Electric Vehicle), Eco, and Power and comes in two different variants Z5 and Z6. The only eye sore when we talk about the Toyota Prius is its hefty price tag.
BMW i8:
INR 2.29 Crore (ex-showroom Delhi)
If you were under the impression that hybrid cars are boring and fail to offer you the rush of driving, that this car certainly smashes all those perceptions. The BMW i8 is presently the ultimate hybrid car money can buy and we hardly doubt this sentiment. This hybrid supercar for the Bavarian carmaker is the first i-series to be launched in India a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. While the engine efficiently produces 231PS of power and 320Nm of torque, the electric motor adds another 131PS and 250Nm to the i8 giving it a combined output of 362PS and 570Nm.
The German carmaker claims that the i8 can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 4.4 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 250 kmph. Moreover despite a large battery pack and a powerful engine, the car weighs just 1490kg, and it has a very low centre of gravity, thanks to is carbon-fibre body. Such an exceptional car surely demands an exceptional pricing and that is exactly how BMW offers it.
