We reported earlier that Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, will launch the much-awaited S-Cross SX4 crossover in the country by June or July, 2015. The crossover is likely to get a new nomenclature – the ACross for the Indian car market. Interestingly, Maruti has imported 1500 units of the 1.6-litre multi-jet diesel engines. This indicates that the company is planning to launch the ACross with a more powerful 1.6L diesel unit.
It was speculated that the crossover will be launched in two engine options- 1.4-litre petrol and 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel. However, the S-Cross is now likely to be offered in two diesel options- an entry-level 1.3L unit and a range-topping 1.6L unit. While the former is good for 91bhp of power and 200Nm of torque, the 1.6L MJD unit churns out 120PS of power and 320Nm of torque. This engine will be paired to a six-speed manual gearbox. The company might also introduce the Suzuki's AllGrip all-wheel drive system.
We believe that the range-topping variant will target the Mahindra XUV 500, while the other variants will rival against the likes of Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster. The 1.4L petrol unit that also powers the Ertiga is good for 91bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. It is quite early to comment whether Maruti will continue to import the 1.6-litre multi-jet diesel unit or locally assemble this engine. The top-spec model is likely to get 16-inch alloy wheels, ABS with EBD, dual airbags, engine start/stop button, hill assist, automatic air conditioning, leather trims and much more.
