Apparently, Maruti is planning to introduce its first crossover vehicle at a grand level, and what better that one of India’s largest award shows. The awards show will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this year and will have millions of viewers watching the show, and Maruti wants to make the best of it.
Indian carmakers have been piggybacking on the popularity of the Indian Film Industry for quite some time now. And frankly it has been truly beneficial for them. The same strategy was implied by Tata Motors last years, which had showcased its Zest compact sedan at the IIFA awards, while Renault did it with the Lodgy in Star Guild Award.
Coming back to the car itself, the crossover has been majorly designed based on the hatchback version of the SX4 sedan that was only launched in the International market. On the exterior front the SX4 ACross slightly resembles its sedan cousin when we look at the front, while the rest of the car is completely new. The India bound model will also see some modification as far as design goes. For instance, unlike the global version’s 3-piece horizontal slat grille, the one on-test in India only has two slats. Moreover, the Indian version looks smaller in size as compared to its European counterpart.
As for its powerhouse, the ACross is expected to be launched with two engine options, a 1.4-litre petrol motor producing 91bhp and 130Nm of torque and a 1.3-litre multi-jet diesel engine churning out 91bhp of power and 200Nm torque. It is also speculated that the ACross is now likely to sport a second oil burner – an all-new range-topping 1.6-Litre unit that is good for 120PS of power and 320Nm of torque. This engine will be paired to a six-speed manual gearbox.
