According to sources Suzuki’s all-new Boosterjet 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, which was first introduced in the iK-2 concept, will now be offered with the upcoming YRA hatchback any time soon. Industry experts claim, that the technology could prove to be expensive for the budget oriented Indian market. Moreover producing this premium engine just for one car might also turn out to be a loss for Marui Suzuki.
While this might be a slightly disappointing, we also have to see the other side of the picture. Even though competitors like Ford and Volkswagen offer turbocharged petrol engines on the EcoSport and the Polo GT TSI respectively, their case is different. Ford India exports the EcoSport to international markets to leverage costs, while Volkswagen’s TSI engine is paired to both the Polo GT and Vento sedan; moreover the volumes of the Polo are in the range of 2,835 units/month. Thus both the brands can afford to offer a turbochanged engine.
If reports are to be believed, the YRA hatchback is expected to be offered with three engine options- two petrol and one diesel motor. The vehicle will get a newly developed K12B 1.25-litre petrol unit that will produce 90bhp and 118Nm of torque, while the second petrol option could be a K14B motor that is good for 91bhp of power and 130Nm of torque. The oil burner will be the tried and tested 1.3-litre multi-jet unit that will produce 90bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. A five-speed manual transmission will come as standard, while a CVT is expected to be on offer.
