The iK-2 concept was earlier showcased at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, where the car was advertised as Suzuki’s Ideal Hatchback. The car will be launched in India as well is currently known as the YRA premium hatchback. In India it will go up against the likes of Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz, Fiat Punto Evo and Volkswagen Polo.
Although the new model shares name with erstwhile premium sedan Baleno, the company said “there's nothing common between the two models. They are completely different.” As of now Maruti Suzuki has revealed no intention of naming the YRA Boleno in India, especially after the carmaker already had an unsuccessful stint with the Boleno premium sedan. Maruti Suzuki had discontinued the mid-sized sedan Baleno in 2006 and was replaced by the SX4 later on. The company currently has Ciaz in the premium sedan segment.
If reports are to be believed, the YRA hatchback is expected to be offered with three engine options- two petrol and one diesel motor. The vehicle will get a newly developed K12B 1.25-litre petrol unit that will produce 90bhp and 118Nm of torque, while the second petrol option could be a K14B motor that is good for 91bhp of power and 130Nm of torque. The oil burner will be the tried and tested 1.3-litre multi-jet unit that will produce 90bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. A five-speed manual transmission will come as standard, while a CVT is expected to be on offer.
MSI said it will have a “high number of new model launches” in this fiscal, including a compact sport utility vehicle, as it looks to consolidate its leadership position. It has set a target of achieving two million sales annually by 2020. In order to boost presence in the premium segment, it has launched a new model S-Cross which will be retailed through the company's new chain of premium car outlets, Nexa. Similar to the S-Cross even the YRA is likely to be sold exclusively via Nexa.
