Mazda Recalls Cars in US: Mazda adds more US states to its recall list for cars with Takata passenger air bags

After a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in June 2014, Mazda Motor Corp had conducted a regional recall of vehicles, which had passenger-side front-seat air bags supplied by Takata Corp. On Thursday the Japanese automakers announced that now they will be expanding their recall to other US states also.

Previously the recall areas were limited to Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and U.S. Virgin Islands. But, according to the latest updates, Mazda’s recall area now includes Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia as well as Guam, Saipan, and American Samoa.

It all started when Japan-based suppliers Takata Corp reported that their passenger-side air bags may be defective in the wider area due to manufacturing problems could lead to defects if the inflators are in high-humidity areas for extended periods.

It has been stated that this action is separate from the previous demands of the US regulators, which requested the automakers including Mazda to recall nationwide certain older-model vehicles with Takata-made driver-side air bags. Mazda has not yet agreed to go forward with this particular request.

As for the other auto brands who have received such a request are BMW, Honda Motor Co, Toyota Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. In addition Mazda has also said in a press statement issued Thursday that it has agreed to join an initiative proposed by Toyota Motor Corp for independent, industry wide joint tests of Takata air bag inflators.
