Renault India that launched the Lodgy MPV is now ready to launch the much-awaited XBA hatchback aka Kayou in the country. Interestingly, the company is also planning to launch a sub-4 metre SUV to rival Ford EcoSport and the upcoming sub-compact SUVs from Maruti and Nissan. If reports are to be believed, the French automaker is planning to introduce the 'Captur' SUV in India.
The Captur is Renault's global product and measures 4.12 metres in length. However, the company will make some changes to styling to reduce its length to avail excise duty benefits offered on cars below 4 metres in length in India. The compact SUV will use heavy local components to achieve aggressive pricing.
Based on the Renault Clio platform, the Captur SUV is currently on sale in select international markets including France. The car is highly popular in home market France and is one of the top-selling Renault's currently on sales. The India-spec model will be offered in both petrol and diesel guise. While the petrol unit could be a 1.2-litre motor, the oil burner will be a 1.5-litre K9K unit that also powers the Pulse, Scala and Duster. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels of the compact SUV via manual or automatic transmissions.
It is expected that the company will bring the next generation Captur, which will be based on the CMF platform. We believe that the sub-compact SUV will go on sale in the country in 2017-18. As a reminder, the Renault XBA compact car will make global debut in India on May 20, 2015.
