It seems the launch of Renault Duster has opened up the floodgates that would eventually see nearly every big carmaker stepping into the mini SUV segment. Over the past few months, the relatively new segment has shown growing interest amongst Indian car buyers.

With cars like the hugely successful Renault Duster along with the much awaited Ford Ecosport and the Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha, the mini SUV segment is expected to grow at a much faster rate. This, then, explains why Volkswagen - one of the world’s biggest carmakers, is looking to bring in its very own contender for the up-and-coming battle.

Volkswagen will enter the mini SUV segment with the Taigun which was unveiled as a concept earlier during the year at the Sao Paulo Motor Show. Based on the same platform as the Up! small car, the Taigun on the outside gives the impression of a true-blue SUV with its muscular design however, at 3.86m long, the Taigun comfortably fits in the mini SUV segment.

While the concept model is powered by a 1-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit producing 110PS of power and 175Nm of torque, we are not sure if the same engine will be introduced to power the production version. If launched, the VW Taigun will go up against the Renault Duster and the upcomiong Ford EcoSport.
