The recent sluggishness seen in the global automotive industry has obliged a number of auto giants to shift their focus on to the emerging markets with a range of simple, affordable cars that these markets demand. While Nissan is already at work reviving its low-cost Datsun brand for emerging markets like India and Africa, Volkswagen has now shown interest in taking a similar route.

Volkswagen, in fact, is looking to go one step further with a range of cars with a base price of just 6,000 Euros. And if we go by the sources, the German carmaker will not just introduce a cheap and cheerful small hatch, but also a sedan and an MPV based on the older generation Polo/Golf platforms.

The company has said that these upcoming cars will not be sold under the Volkswagen nameplate. The new range is likely to carry a brand name of its own. Volkswagen is likely to make its plans concrete by the end of this year and if the plans are approved, the first of the models will make its debut in the next two years’ time.
