Madurai, June 20: Madurai has left other districts behind to be the new location for the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), as the Centre gave a nod to Thoppur in Madurai and the same was communicated by the Union Health Ministry to the Tamil Nadu government.

Tamil Nadu had proposed five sites to set up AIIMS. Besides Thoppur, Sengipatti in Thanjavur, Pudukottai town, Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram and Perundurai in Erode were under consideration. But after a public meet in Melur yesterday, Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar, announced the Centre’s decision. As per TOI, Udhayakumar said that he had already told that would resign if Madurai wasn’t selected for the establishment of the AIIMS.” He added that he proposed Madurai as it will help attract the attention of the central government to the place. Having said that, AIIMS would uplift Madurai economically as the transport connectivity would increase too. It would also benefit people from over 15 districts with regard to medical facilities and employment opportunities.

As per reports, Thoppur bagged the highest marks among the five places in Tamil Nadu which was shortlisted for setting up the prestigious institute. The Centre finally gave a green signal to Madurai after it agreed to five conditions which are- four-lane connectivity from the national highway, 20MVA power supply from two different feeders, adequate water supply, handover of land, shifting of transformer and passing of pipeline through the site which will be carried out in agreement with IOCL.

AIIMS is currently at eight places including the national capital- New Delhi, Patna, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar, Rishikesh, Raipur, Guntur and Nagpur.
