CBSE Board Exam 2017 Biology paper has created quite a controversy when a question was posed to students about whether burning is better or burial. After a parent questioned the same on twitter, newspapers and media were quick on picking up with questions and before we know, the simple question was turned into a controversy. Some of the comments had turned a science question into communal overtones and people were even reported on commenting how it was not related. There is one section of the society, however, which is all the more angry with the controversy and it is the science teachers. Many have shown displeasure at the fuss created by reports about a simple science questions.

We reached out to teachers and they were extremely displeased with the entire series of comments. One teacher was practically livid with anger, “Why make science about religion? The entire purpose of science is to ask students to think and question, reason with the set narratives and do what is best for the environment. It is a science paper and seeking students views on air and soil pollution. The rationale is to make a child reason and analyze. There is no right or wrong…just better ways of doing things.” Another senior science teacher from a Kendriya Vidhyalaya chuckled and commented how questioning the question just goes on to show how people would go to any lengths to twist things just to make news. “The question is not about cremation…its about burning as compared to burying, only fools would make it out as anything but,” the principal added on conditions of anonymity.

We reached out to quite a few science and biology teachers and all of them were unanimous in showing their displeasure at the controversy. “There is no controversy. We are not asking students about your religious choices…it is a scientific enquiry, just sad that people would send their children to school but cringe at them being taught anything!” A principal of another school chose not to comment, stating that as a person of science, it would be completely irresponsible for him to even think of what is happening as it was just not worth it.

“Its like people just want to find some fault or another with our education system,” shared another veteran. She added, “People have to believe that pointing fingers is not enough. If we keep turning education into left or right, what is the point of educating? It’s like we teach our children that all are equal and parents shout…that is okay to write in exam but in reality we are not.” Teachers have urged parents and other people not to create a controversy over a non-issue. Pollution is a reality and encouraging students to think about it just a scientific method. Teachers have urged parents and people in general to let exams be all about just examinations and not to politicize everything.
