CBSE concluded the Geography Class 12 Board Exam yesterday. Like most of the Class 12 Board Examination 2017 papers, Geography too this year was well within the syllabus. Students approached for comments said that the paper was lengthy but from the syllabus. Teachers also were happy with the paper, saying that the direct questions always help students. The balanced paper with just the right amount of difficult questions, teachers suggested, were appropriate for distinguishing merit. The analysis of the paper did suggest that some of the 3 marks questions were very lengthy.
One students from a top private school in Delhi was very happy with the paper. “Yes we were writing way till the end but that was because it was easy and we could. Some of the short answer questions were really easy and proper time management was all that was required.” Another students was confident of getting great marks in the paper as it was pretty much from the expected set of questions. This, however, was not all unanimous.
Some students were very unhappy with the question paper and said that certain questions marked lower required a lot of explanation, which took away time from attempting the other long essay type questions. A teacher concurred with students on this, “The pattern is now shifting more towards objectivity; Under these, asking questions that are lengthy and require long answers makes it difficult for students.” Another set of students seemed to feel that one set was lengthier than the other, giving soe students an undue advantage.
“I got set A while my friend got set B, there were questions in Set B which made it much more difficult than set A,” reported a student. Teachers however believe that the papers were balanced and that there were two or three questions which were perhaps lengthier than expected, overall it was very much expected. “Examinations should properly provide a child the opportunity to exploit their own understanding and truly test their learning. Making a fairly easy paper is not the answer. If we need to raise the quality of education in India,” the teacher commented, “we must look at making examinations truly important.” Her colleague agreed and said that CBSE Board Examinations have become fairly easy and offer no competition. She even went on to say that the focus is always on subjects like Mathematics but every subject is important and examinations should treat all children equally and give them an opportunity to truly chase excellence.
