CBSE has finally passed the resolution mandating the Class X Board Examination from 2018. The resolution passed yesterday followed by the Chairperson’s comments hinted at bringing about other changes along with the return in 2018. One big change recommended by CBSE is to continue three languages till class X instead of class 8. The Chairperson also hinted at reviving the old scheme of exam and assured that the detailed circular would be soon sent out to all CBSE affiliated schools. The schools wait for clarity regarding the changes to expect in the exam scheme and pattern with the return of CBSE Class X Board Exams. The next big question is what other changes this resolution might lead to.
Effectively, when the CBSE had changed the Class X Boards with the option of school based board, it had done so in order to take care of growing concerns ranging from low pass percentage as well as increased stress. It has also suggested to changes to further assist the learning curve by bringing out a more comprehensive evaluation system or the CCE pattern as famously referred to. This change, however, was strictly limited to the Class X Board levels. With increased concerns in terms of decline in the quality of students graduating, there was an increased demand for return of the Class X Board Examination. It however must be noted that as a lot of changes were affected to make the boards optional, new changes would have to be made when reviving the board examinations from 2018 for Class X.
To begin with, it is important to stress on the fact that the launch of the CCE or the Comprehensive Curriculum Evaluation scheme preceded the launch of School Based Board Examinations for CBSE Class X students. As such, as per the CCE, there was a distinctive division of curriculum of the Class X Boards. Teachers contacted for comments regarding the comeback of CBSE Class X Board examination wondered whether they should expect the change in curriculum as well to the full syllabus examination pattern of pre 2009 exam scheme. Under the current scheme of examinations, the CBSE Class X Exam only covers the final term syllabus. In the earlier Class X Board examination, however, the entire syllabus was covered in the final examinations.

Questions regarding the Detention Policy are also being raised by the school authorities. One of the biggest turnaround of school based board examination was the decrease in the number of detainees. The pass percentage had rapidly increased. As such, the schools are asking whether the revival of Class X Board examination by CBSE will also lead to a retrospective change in its detention policy. Needless to say, the stress factor cannot be discounted and with return of the Board Examination, parents and students are sure to feel the pressure mounting. As such, teachers of prominent schools in Delhi believe that CBSE should have a stricter No Detention Policy and assurance of continuation of education to pacify students.
Would the Grading System be replaced for the earlier Percentage System again? This is the other important questions being raised in regards the return of the Class 10 Board Examination. The grading system has replaced the percentage system long back. This was closely linked with the revision in the Detention Policy. The return of the board examination would undoubtedly also lead to a revision in the scoring system. As per the new curriculum, a large part of the grading system is also added into the final grade of the student. Teachers worry that with external examination, the final grade of the students might take a larger hit.
