The Preliminary examination will consist of two papers on General Studies. Both papers will have objective type multiple choice questions. Both papers will be for 200 marks each. The time limit for both the papers is 2 hours only. Paper I has 100 questions and paper II has 80 questions in it. The question papers (test booklets) are set in English and Hindi. Questions relating to English language comprehension skills will be of class X level and they will be tested through passages from English language only, without providing its Hindi translation in the question paper. For both writing and marking answers in the OMR sheet (Answer sheet), candidates must use black ball pen only. Pens with any other colors are prohibited. Use of pencil or ink pen is not allowed. Blind candidates would be allowed an extra 20 minutes of time for each paper.

Wrong answers will be penalized by negative marking. This examination is meant to serve as a screening test only. The marks obtained in this exam will not be counted for determining the final order of merit. Those candidates who are declared qualified in this exam can go further for admission to the Main Examination.
