The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computerized test, organized by Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) . This test serves as the primary eligibility criteria to take admission in the management administration programs of IIMs. The test is conducted every year on the national level. To appear for CAT, the candidate should have a graduate degree in any discipline with aggregate marks of 50% or equivalent CGPA, from any recognized university or institute. However, for the reservation category, the candidate should have minimum of 45% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA in the final year of graduation. There is no age limit for the CAT entrance exam, anyone can apply at any age. Merely accomplishing the minimum eligibility criteria of CAT 2014 will not ensure the selection by IIMs or other B-schools.

Candidates are eligible to apply for CAT if they have equivalent qualifications such as:

  • If candidates have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or technology (4 years after class 12, Post B Sc, post diploma) or B E, B Tech equivalent examinations, of professional societies, recognized by MHRD, UPSC or AICTE can apply.
  • If candidates have any qualifications recognized by Association of Indian Universities New Delhi, which is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree awarded by UGC recognized university or institutions.
  • Candidates, who have not covered above equivalency, should produce a certificate from Association of Indian Universities New Delhi.

CAT 2014 scores will be accepted by 19 IIMs and over 150 B-schools across India. The total number of IIM seats is 3,335.
