Kolkata: Several schools and academic institutions will remain closed in various parts of West Bengal following a notice from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regarding Cyclone Dana, which is likely to make landfall on the coast of West Bengal by October 24, 2024.
As per the notice issued by the School Education Department of the West Bengal Government, academic activities in seven districts–including South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Hooghly, Howrah, and Kolkata–will be suspended from October 23 to October 26.
‘..the undersigned is directed to notify for all concerned that if any activities planned by any particular school concerned may please be kept suspended w.e.f 23rd to 26 October, 2024 in the District of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Hooghly, Howrah and Kolkata as per special bulletin issued by IMD as cyclonic storm may make landfall in West Bengal coast by 24 October, 2024,’ reads the notice published on the official website of West Bengal of Board of Secondary Education at https://wbbse.wb.gov.in/.
In anticipation of Cyclone Dana, West Bengal’s Fire and Emergency Services Minister, Sujit Bose, announced that teams have been deployed at 85 stations throughout the state. He detailed the distribution of these teams, stating that 11 will be stationed in South Kolkata, eight in North Kolkata, 12 in South 24 Parganas, 24 in North 24 Parganas, six in Howrah, four in West Medinipur, and five in East Medinipur, news agency ANI reported.
According to the latest information shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression over Bay of Bengal has further intensified into a ‘Deep Depression’ on Tuesday. The system lay cantered at 690 km from Paradip (Odisha); 740 km from Sagar Island (West Bengal) and 710 km from Khepupara (Bangladesh).

Sharing a post on X(formerly Twitter), IMD said, “Yesterday’s deep depression over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 18 kmph during past 6 hours intensified into a cyclonic storm “DANA” (pronounced as Dana), and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 23rd October, over the same region near latitude 16.3° N and longitude 89.9°E, about 560 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 630 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal) and 630 km south-southeast of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is very likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over northwest Bay of Bengal by early morning of 24th and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island during night of 24th to morning of 25th October, 2024 as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph.”
