Gorakhpur: The student union elections of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University that were supposed to take place on September 13, that is, on Thursday were deferred after two rival groups clashed during campaigning in the University’s campus. The incident escalated after some supporters of the student union president candidate Ranjeet Singh Srinet tried pasting posters on the Law department’s wall and were stopped by a few teachers of the same faculty. The supporters of Srinet misbehaved with the teachers. Soon afterwards, another candidate named Anil Dubey came along with his supporters at the same place and a clash followed between the two groups. Following the clashes, the faculty and the University teacher association president Vinod Singh met Vice-Chancellor VK Singh and told him that they wouldn’t be supporting the elections. Singh said, “Political parties are backing the candidates and the atmosphere has become very tense.” He added that the teachers were quite enraged and none were ready for the elections. Singh further said that teachers were being threatened and misbehaved with because of the elections.
Meanwhile, Station House Officer (SHO) Ravi Rai, Cantt police station said the students broke the glass of vehicles. He added that mild force was used to disperse the students who were engaged in the clashes.
Election officer Prof OP Pandey said, “During the meeting with the advisory committee at VC’s residence, the decision was taken to postpone the varsity student union election which was scheduled for September 13. The university will remain closed on September 12 and 13”.
