The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been directed by the High Court of Delhi to strictly put into effect its latest rule prohibiting schools affiliated to the CBSE board from commercial activity. The commercial activity includes the sale of books or uniforms on the school campus. “We are disposing of the writ petition with direction to the CBSE to ensure that its circular is strictly implemented by the institutions,” stated the bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Anu Malhotra.
A social worker Sunil Pokhriyal filed a PIL to the court seeking direction to hold back the schools from carrying out commercial activities in the school campus. The court has agreed to the PIL and stated that the issue highlighted “is in public interest, especially for school-going children and their parents.” (ALSO READ: CBSE advises schools against Commercial Activity of selling books, stationery and uniform, issues Circular)
On April 19, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had issued a circular following the complaints raised by the stakeholders as well as parents regarding commercial activities being carried out in schools that included selling of books and uniforms in the school premises or through vendors. On March 3, a petition was filed urging the court to enforce CBSE’s first circular on the issue that was brought out on February 21, 2011. The issue raised on February 21, 2011 warned schools not to indulge in any form of commercial activity.
