May 1, 2017: This year, 122 private engineering colleges in the country have opted for progressive closure. This essentially means that these colleges would not be conducting any fresh admissions from 2017 onwards and would close once the existing batches complete. This news comes on the back of reports of a decline in the admissions across various Engineering Colleges in the country. A total of 122 private engineering colleges have opted for progressive closure, reports the AICTE. This is troublesome when the HRD Ministry is clearly pushing STEM Education. Below is a list of the 122 private unaided colleges that have opted for progressive closure since 2016-17. Going by numbers, three years ago the sudden decline in admission across engineering colleges in the country had given rise to concern. Private colleges with over 600 engineering seats had recorded a low of 143 admissions in the year 2013-14. The numbers seemed to revive in the following years but not by a big margin. On a whole the picture continued to be grim for private engineering colleges in the country. The report released yesterday by PTI further confirmed the on-going battle of meeting expenses of these private engineering colleges. This comes after this years’ budget that indicated an increased investment towards STEM Courses. (Read Key Highlights of Union Budget 2016-17 as applicable to Education Sector). “Failing to survive, private engineering colleges either seek progressive closure to ultimately shut down or turn into polytechnic or science and art colleges. Since the best lot of students takes admission in prestigious colleges like IITs, NITs and other centrally funded institutions, the others left in the fray settle for private colleges. The low number of enrolments makes it difficult for institutions to survive,” a senior AICTE official said. The List* has been sources from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) website. It has 23 engineering colleges in Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Jalgaon and Kohlapur and other areas of Maharashtra closed down during the 2016-17 session. Reason stated by these private engineering colleges was the declining number of admissions which made it almost impossible for them to maintain operative costs. Fifteen engineering colleges in Gujarat, 7 in Telangana, 11 in Karnataka, 12 in Uttar Pradesh, 6 in Punjab, 11 in Rajasthan and 13 in Haryana closed down during the period. It was reported that over 8 lakh Engineering seats had remained vacant in 2014-15

While the news is grim, there is not enough reason for alarm, suggest experts contacted for their comments. A senior professor with one of the Government Engineering colleges said that this was a positive shift towards students opting for quality over a degree. There is no doubt some validity in the statement made. Studies have reported that over 80 percent of engineering graduates in the country are not deemed as employable. With as many as 8 lakh engineering graduates seeking sub standard means of employment, the blame has to be put on the private engineering colleges.

“Private Engineering colleges saw a boom in the country when students could not get into IITs and NITs. Now the scenario is changing. There are now far greater number of IITs and NITs and the government is taking positive steps towards introducing quality institutes. Better choices have driven students to opt out of below standard private engineering colleges,” shared another expert from the domain.

The shift is just a correction and students should not feel alarmed. The closure of private engineering colleges is in no way any indication of popularity of engineering in the country. The number of students opting for various entrance examinations is a proof positive. This year, over 12 lakh students have appeared in the JEE Main 2017 examination. The steady number of students wanting to opt for engineering as a career continues to be a resounding affirmation of the growing interest in the career. The only shift, sources suggest, is student’s determination to choose quality over a degree, hence the shift should not worry students.
