IAS Smita Sabharwal is one of the most well-known and admired civil servants in India. She achieved remarkable success at a young age, becoming the youngest candidate to clear the UPSC Civil Services Exam in her second attempt in the year 2000. At the time, she was just 22-23 years old and secured an impressive All India Rank of 4. For many, passing the UPSC civil services exam is a lifelong ambition, often requiring years of dedicated preparation. Only a small percentage of annual applicants succeed on their first attempt. Some candidates need two or three tries, while others pursue different goals after unsuccessful attempts.
Born in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Smita spent her early years moving around due to her father’s defense background. She completed her schooling at St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad (Hyderabad). In her 1995 CISCE Indian School Certificate examination, she excelled academically, scoring 94 per cen in English and Hindi, along with 90 per cent in Economics.
Smita Sabharwal is married to IPS officer Akun Sabharwal. Interestingly, their marriage was not a love marriage. Both their fathers, who served in the defense forces, arranged the match. Smita and Akun knew each other as friends and batchmates during their training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, but romance wasn’t part of their relationship at that time.
Known for her unique approach to work, Smita Sabharwal has earned a reputation as one of the most famous and admired IAS officers in the country. She is renowned as the people’s officer, has served in various roles across Telangana, including postings in Warangal, Visakhapatnam, Karimnagar, and Chittoor. Her latest assignment is at the Chief Minister’s office, where she holds a prominent position.
Beyond her administrative achievements, she has also become a social media sensation. She enjoys a strong online presence with over 400,000 followers on Twitter and more than 700,000 followers on Instagram.
Smita’s journey continues to inspire aspiring civil servants, proving that dedication, hard work, and determination can lead to incredible success.
