New Delhi: The Union Public Service Examination(UPSC) conducts the Civil Services(Prelims and Main)exam to recruit candidates for IAS, IPS, and other related posts and positions. Read the inspiring journey of Sonal Goel, an IAS officer from Panipat, Haryana, who overcame challenges and secured All India Rank(AIR)13 in her second attempt in the UPSC Civil Services exam. Despite Sonal Goel’s father’s advice to have a backup plan, she successfully pursued her dream of becoming a civil servant.
Born in Panipat, Sonal completed her schooling in Delhi. After finishing Class 12th, she completed her graduation from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University. He also earned a Company Secretary (CS) degree from ICSI, New Delhi, which augments her expertise in Finance and Commerce. It is reported that Goel initially did not know the UPSC civil services exam. It was only after reading an article about a civil servant in a magazine that she became inspired to pursue a career in civil services.
Determined to succeed, Sonal decided to prepare for the UPSC exam while simultaneously enrolling in an LLB course at Delhi University. She further demonstrated her academic excellence at Kurukshetra University, where she completed her L.L.M., enriching her expertise in jurisprudence. Prior to that, she earned her L.L.B. from Delhi University. Additionally, she holds a master’s degree in Public Policy from IGNOU, creating a well-rounded blend of administration, law, and policymaking in her profile.
In 2006, Sonal took the UPSC exam for the first time but did not succeed. Undeterred, she worked even harder and appeared for the exam again in 2007. This time, her efforts paid off, and she secured All India Rank 13, becoming an IAS officer. Sonal Goel’s story is a testament to hard work, perseverance, and dedication, proving that success is achievable with determination, even when faced with challenges.

However, this setback fueled my determination to leave no stone unturned in achieving my goal #UPSC 💯 I then devoted myself entirely to mastering the General Studies paper and improving at other aspects of Mains emphasizing on Notes making , repeated revisions and #AnswerWriting. ,” Goel in an official tweet said.
“Reflecting on this journey, I am reminded of the invaluable lesson it holds for the aspirants . It’s a reminder that with dedication and relentless effort, no obstacle is insurmountable. Every setback and failure is an opportunity to learn, improvise and ultimately, triumph 🔥🔥 So Dear students, Believe in your abilities, pursue your goals with passion, and never lose sight of your dreams. It is through perseverance that greatness is achieved 💕,” the tweet further reads.
