The NIRF Indian Rankings 2017 is out. IISc or Indian Institute of Science Bangalore maintains its top slot two years in a row. There are many reasons that make IISc as one of the top institutes of higher education in the country. The rankings released today in a press conference by Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for HRD, further cemented the universities place in the country. IISc, Bangalore is a university offering pure sciences in the country. It’s programs, not only offer the very best in cutting edge technological research, it is home to some of the brightest minds in the country. Only last month, IISc had driven home a bigger honour of ranking 8 in the World’s Rankings of small Universities in the Timer Higher Education Rankings for 2017. This fact was one of the reasons why IISc beats others to the top slot in the National Indian Ranking Framework released today. The Minister himself confirmed that IISc Bangalore’s international standing is one of the biggest reasons why the university continues to remain the slot. Another important reason is the focus on research and development. The small varsity is very particular about choosing the very best talent in the country. Not just that, it also provides a strong faculty. Among the current faculty members, there are 51 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardees, 74 INSA fellows, 97 IASc Fellows, 57 NASI fellows, 50 INAE fellows, and 56 J.C. Bose National Fellows, which is indicative of the high level of academic excellence of the Institute faculty. Not just that, the 500 strong faculty university continues to motivate its academia to indulge in active research in the domain of engineering and science. The NIRF 2017 this year considered factors like research, the qualifications of the faculty members as well as the placement record of the institute. With the stellar faculty and a strong placement record, the university has been a center for excellence for long. The IISc initially offered only post graduate courses. It was in the year 2011 that IISc introduced undergraduate degree course. The four year Bachelor of Science (Research) course offered to about 500 students at present includes a strong curriculum with excellent exposure to laboratory work and active research in the laboratories of the Institute. At present the institute has about 4000 students of which 2600 are enrolled in doctoral programs. The Institute also offers several Masters degree programs in engineering (MTech, MTech (Research), MDes, and MMgmt) in which about 900 students are enrolled.
