New Delhi, April 3: National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on Tuesday released its 2018 India Rankings for Educational institutes and thereby declared the list of the top 10 universities for this year. Indian Institute of Science (IIS) Bengaluru continued its winning streak and was adjudged as the best institute and hence retained the top slot. IIS Bengaluru was followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
The list of rankings was announced by Union Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar at the Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
The NIRF rankings had a total of 2,809 institutions participating under nine categories, which were- overall, universities, engineering, colleges, management, pharmacy, medical, architecture, and law. There were at least 301 universities, 906 engineering institutions, 487 management institutions, 286 pharmacy institutions, 71 law institutions, 101 medical institutions, 59 architecture institutions and 1087 general degree colleges that participated in the ranking process.
NIRF India Rankings 2018 for Top 10 Universities:
1. Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru
2. Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi
3. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
4. Anna University, Chennai
5. University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad
6. Jadavpur University, Kolkata
7. University of Delhi, Delhi
8. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore
9. Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune
10. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh
While these are the top 10 institutes/universities that have been adjudged overall, there are several other educational institutes that have been declared as the best in their performing field.
For instance, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has been adjudged the best engineering college and the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) as the best management institution. Among colleges, Delhi University’s Miranda House was adjudged as the best college and St Stephen’s College came in second- although it participated in the NIRF ranking’s for the first time.
Among the medical colleges, AIIMS was adjudged as the best medical college. In the architecture and law categories, IIT-Kharagpur and National Law School of India University, Bengaluru topped the list. Meanwhile, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali; Jamia Hamdard and Panjab University were ranked as top colleges for study of pharmacy.
Union Minister Javadekar while making the announcement for top 10 institutes/universities said that participation in the NIRF Rankings would be mandatory from next year. Public institutions which come under the ambit of NIRF will have to participate in this process or otherwise they would be facing a fund cut, said Javadekar.
