QS Rankings 2025: The Indian institutions have once again shown their dominance in the recently released QS Ranking 2025. This time, as many as nine Indian universities and institutions have been included in world’s top 50 in the subject-wise ranking of QS Ranking. The institutions include IIT Madras, IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur and many other names. However, some of these prestigious institutions are at the bottom with low scores.
As per QS World University Rankings list, as many as nine Indian institutions featured in the world’s top 50 in the QS subject-wise rankings, while some prestigious institutions such as IITs, two IIMs and JNU have dropped in their rankings compared to last year. This year India secured 12 position in the top 50 in subject-wise rankings and broad faculty areas. Surprisingly, Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad secured the 20th position globally for Engineering-Minerals and Mining.
IIT Mumbai and Kharagpur are ranked 28th and 45th, respectively, in the Engineering-Minerals and Mining category, although both institutions have experienced a decline in their rankings. Conversely, IIT Delhi and Mumbai have enhanced their standings in the Engineering and Technology sector, moving up from 45th to 26th and 28th place, respectively. Additionally, both institutes have also advanced in the Engineering-Electrical and Electronics rankings, securing spots in the top 50.
IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore continue to be listed among the top 50 institutions globally for Business and Management Studies, although both experienced a drop in their rankings compared to the previous year. Specifically, IIM Ahmedabad’s position decreased from 22nd to 27th, while IIM Bangalore’s ranking fell from 32nd to 40th.
IIT Madras (petroleum engineering) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) (development studies) remained in the world top 50 but slipped a few places in their rankings.
In the latest edition of the QS subject-specific rankings, India ranks fifth in terms of the number of new entries after China, the US, the UK and Korea and 12th in termss published the University Rankings for 2025 across 55 subjects on its official site. The rankings are determined by five criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, research reputation per publication, H-index, and international research network categorized by broad faculty area. This year, 79 universities from India have been included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2025.

Under the Arts and Humanities category, a total of 10 universities have made it to the list, including Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Indian Institute of Bombay (IITB) that have secured their place in the top 200 rank list.
Under the Engineering and Technology category. Out of these, 5 universities are listed in the rank list below 100, IIT Delhi (Rank 26), IIT Bombay (Rank 28), IIT Madras (Rank 53), IIT Kharagpur (Rank 60), IIT Kanpur (Rank 72) and IIS Bangalore (Rank 84).
In the Life Sciences and Medicine category, six Indian universities have made it to the rankings, with AIIMS Delhi leading at position 226. In the Natural Science category, 19 Indian universities are represented, with IIS achieving a rank of 109. Additionally, in the Social Science and Management category, 20 Indian universities are included, with IIT Delhi securing the 75th position.
