Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanswami, popularly known as R K Narayan, who lived a life full of accolades, took a rest on this day in 2001. The Indian writer, better known for ‘Malgudi Days’, awed the whole world with his simple and subtle writing. He is regarded as India’s greatest writer in English in the 20th century and is often compared to William Faulkner for his world-building, wit, and compassion towards ordinary life.
Narayan won numerous awards in his sixty-year career, Including Padma Vibhushan, India’s Second highest civilian award in 2000. Moreover, he was honored with the AC Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature, honorary membership of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Sahitya Akademi Award. Narayan was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature multiple times but never won the honor.
Narayan’s books are full of realism, with compassionate characters going through ordinary problems. Narayan’s understanding of Indian society and his ability to create a connection with the reader has made his books so popular.
From being a corrupt tour guide to becoming a holy man, ‘The Guide’ depicts the spiritual journey of Raju. The book was later adapted as the film ‘Guide’ in which Dev Anand played the role of Raju The film became an instant hit and is now regarded as one of the finest works of Indian Cinema. R K Narayan was also honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for this book.
Set during Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India movement, this novel explores the unusual yet comic love story of Sriram. Sriram, a high school graduate, falls in love with Bharati, a girl who is active in the ‘Quit India’ movement. Sriram in an unfamiliar territory struggles with contrasting thoughts and practices. ‘Waiting for the Mahatma’ is one of Narayan’s most successful novels.
Offering rare insights into the complexities of Indian middle-class society, ‘The Dark Room’, is the story of a woman standing up for herself. Savitri, frustrated by the torments of his husbands, leaves him. However, her struggle doesn’t end in a deeply patriarchal world.
This novel is the first book in which Narayan introduces the fictional town of Malgudi, a town that became persistent in his later works. Swaminathan, a ten-year-old, gets involved in the freedom struggle. The book explores the influence of the environment and community on children. Swami and Friends is a testament to Narayan’s simplistic writing style and his love for depicting ordinary events with innocence.
Malgudi Days is a collection of short stories set in the fictional town of Malgudi located in South India. Each story portrays a facet of life in Malgudi. It explores the innocence and simplicity of ordinary people with comic undertones. Malgudi Days was later adapted into a television series by Shankar Nag that telecasted on Door Darshan. This book is by far the most known work of the author.
