Schools across Delhi NCR are celebrating the festival of Vasant Panchami. The festival marks the birth of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, art, science and technology. As such, there is a special association of the festival with students all across. Students in national capital region were seen dressed in varying shades of yellow, as they braced the nip in the air to celebrate the onset of spring and offer special prayers to Goddess Saraswati.
Many stories abound in relation to the festival of Vasant Panchami or Basant Panchami. The festival gets its name because it is celebrated on the 5th day of the “Basant” or Hindu month of Magha. While there are different stories, the prayers to Goddess Saraswati constitute an important aspect of the rituals. The schools are celebrating the festival in style and vigour. The legend of Goddess Saraswati goes that the legendary poet Kalidasa was about to take his life after being jilted by his lover. Just before he could do that, however, Goddess Saraswati appeared and asked him to take a dip in the river. Once he did that, he emerged from the river a knowledgable and wise man. Hence the association of Goddess Saraswati with wisdom. On the archaeological and more scientific lines, the Aryan tribe travelled to India through the Khyber Pass and settled on the shores of River Saraswati…which became an important source of life for the clan. The Aryan Clan s said to have populated the majority of Northern India after the collapse of the Harappan Civilization while the Dravidian races shifted southward.
