The Civil Services Examination(CSE) is one of the toughest exams, which is conducted in three stages. Every year, the exam is held by the Union Public Service Commission. More than ten lakh aspirants appear for the exam. Several IAS Officers have gone viral either due to their exemplary work, unique initiatives, or impactful public service. One such civil servant is Smita Sabharwal. Senior IAS officer Smita Sabharwal is often known as ‘People’s Officer.’ At present, she has gone on a long leave until January 31, 2026.
Smita Sabharwal, born on June 19, 1977, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, is the daughter of Colonel Pranab Das and Purabi Das. She reportedly cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination at the age of only 23 in 2000, attaining an outstanding All India Rank(AIR) of 4. Meanwhile, Smita Sabharwal’s husband is also a civil servant.
Smita Sabharwal’s marriage to IPS officer Akun was arranged by their fathers, who served in the defense forces. Both Akun and Smita were classmates and friends throughout their training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), but were not romantically involved during that period.
In 2004, Akun Sabharwal, an IPS officer, married his LBSNAA classmate, IAS officer Smita Sabharwal. Akun was born on December 4, 1976, in Patiala, Punjab. His father was an officer in the Indian Air Force. From a young age, Akun wanted to do something to serve the nation.
Owing to his father’s job posting, Akun was able to attend several Kendriya Vidyalayas in various states like Chandigarh, Bangalore, Ooty, Pune, Assam, and Delhi. This allowed Akun a broad experience and exposure to different cultures, traditions, and lifestyles. As a child, his desire to serve the country as a medical professional led him to study medicine.
According to the DNA report, he earned a Dentist’s degree from Patiala Dental College and then practiced dentistry for many years. Later on, he decided to take the UPSC Civil Services Exam. He cleared the exam successfully, securing All India Rank 33, and chose to join the Indian Police Service (IPS).
