Mizoram witnessed voting for 40-member legislative assembly seats on November 7 at 1276 polling stations where more than 8.52 lakh voters exercised their franchise to decide the fate of as many as 174 candidates. Mizoram, which came into existence on February 20, 1987, is currently governed by Mizo National Front under Chief Minister Zoramthanga, whose tenure will expire on December 17 this year.
Zoramthanga-led party MNF had won 26 out of 40 seats in the 2018 elections, with Congress bagging merely five seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning just one seat. The MNF had ousted the Congress to return to power after 10 years. The Congress had defeated the MNF in 2008 by winning 32 seats. Five years later, Congress had won 34 seats while the MNF could manage to win a mere 5 seats.
Mizoram has 8,52,088 voters including 4,13,064 male and 4,39,028 female voters out of which 50,611 electors are in the age group of 18-19 years, according to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. Besides this, there are 8490 senior citizens above the age of 80 in the state.
Notably, the gazette notification for Mizoram Assembly election was issued on October 13, and the last date to file nomination was October 20. The scrutiny of nominations took place on October 21, and the candidates had the last date to withdraw their nominations till October 23.
