Telangana, which was carved out of Andhra Pradesh on June 2, 2014, after a protracted fight for the statehood, is witnessing a single-phase voting on November 30, 2023. Part of Hyderabad's princely kingdom under Nizam rule until India's Independence in 1947, Telangana region has a rich historical and cultural legacy.
The demand for a separate Telangana state began in the 1950s when people from this region felt being left out of the merged Andhra Pradesh due to the dominance of Andhra region. The movement for separate state began in late 1960s and early 1970s, but their dream came into reality in the year 2014, when the Centre passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, and Telangana was formed a separate state on June 2, 2014 with Hyderabad as its capital.
Telangana has added about 17 lakh new voters to the voting list with over three crore voters. The notification for the assembly elections was announced on November 3, with the last date of nominations of candidates and withdrawal of candidature was fixed November 10 and November 15, respectively. The tenure of Telangana legislative assembly is scheduled to end on January 16, 2024.
Telangana witnessed the first assembly election in April 2014, and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) under the leadership of K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) emerged victorious and KCR became Telangana's first chief minister. KCR was re-elected in the next assembly elections held in 2018, and the party has since then maintained its strong position in the assembly, winning most of the seats in both 2014 and 2018 elections.
