Shah Rukh Khan is an emotion for all his fans. The actor never fails to turn heads with his movies, and every time an SRK film hits the big screen, fans eagerly line up in queues to secure seats in theatres. However, there was one film in Shah Rukh Khan’s illustrious career that became a disaster, and even King Khan couldn’t save it. Released in 2000, the film we are talking about is Hey Ram.

This movie sparked significant controversy at the time of its release. Shah Rukh Khan portrayed the role of a Pathani Muslim in the film. Interestingly, he did not charge any fee for his performance. Despite being a box-office failure, Hey Ram earned critical acclaim and bagged three National Awards: Best Supporting Actor (Atul Kulkarni), Best Costume Design, and Best Special Effects.

According to Wikipedia, the movie was made on a budget of Rs 11 crore but managed to earn only Rs 11.3 crore at the box office. Hey Ram was directed and written by Kamal Haasan, who also played the lead role.

The fictional Indian drama follows the journey of Saketh Ram (Kamal Haasan), a disillusioned man who plots to assassinate Mohandas Gandhi (Iravathi Hershe). After losing his wife, Aparna (Rani Mukerji), to sectarian violence, Saketh transforms into a Hindu extremist. Although his wife’s death is caused by Muslims, he shifts the blame to Gandhi, criticizing his tolerant stance on religious differences. Consumed by hatred and a thirst for vengeance, Saketh spirals into a world of fanaticism and zealotry.

Apart from Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Haasan, the movie also featured Rani Mukerji in a lead role. Despite its stellar cast, the storyline of the film failed to resonate with audiences, ultimately resulting in its commercial failure.
