Well, we are not actually sure if A Death in the Gunj is indeed a murder mystery, but it is indeed an interesting directorial debut by acclaimed actress Konkona Sen Sharma. The Bengali actress, whose mother is actress-filmmaker Aparna Sen, has done some good films in Bollywood, too – like Page 3, Life in a Metro and Wake Up Sid, to name a few. Konkona who has earlier directed a short film titled Naamkoron 10 years ago, is now following in her mother’s footsteps of directing a feature film.
The trailer of A Death in the Gunj makes us feel she has a winner of a film in her kitty already! The whole Kolkata feel, the characters, the story – it is all so feel good even though it’s the story about a death or a murder.
A Death in the Gunj premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2016 in the Special Presentation Section. The film is being described as “A coming-of-age story about a shy young Indian student who quietly and fatefully unravels during a family road trip”. But we think it is more of a murder mystery, going by the name and the blood we see in the trailer.
In the end, it’s a love triangle between Kalki Koechlin, Vikrant Massey and Ranvir Shorey (who is Konkona’s estranged husband). The film also stars veterans Om Puri and Tanuja along with Jim Sarbh (the terrorist in Sonam Kapoor’s Neerja), Tillotama Shome and Gulshan Devaiah.
