Over the career of 36 years, Aamir Khan has earned the title of ‘Mr Perfectionist’ because of his meticulous approach to filmmaking and his belief in quality over quantity. But despite this, there are few misfires in his career, with some of his worst films being poorly released in Bollywood.
One of them was 2000-released Mela. Helmed by Dharmesh Darshan, the film starred his brother Faisal Khan with Twinkle Khanna in lead role. Mela was inspired by 1971 hit film Caravan that was an action drama.
Mela received moderate or bad reviews from the critics and masses. Commercially too, it was a disappointment, earning just Rs 25 crore worldwide. Moreover, it has received 3.7 ratings on IMBd, becoming the lowest-rated film of Aamir Khan’s career.

Mela’s songs and dialogues were heavily criticised by the audience. Aamir Khan himself called this film the biggest mistake of his career. In the last 17 years, he made films like Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini, 3 idiots, Dhoom: 3, PK and Dangal, all of which performed exceptionally well. “It is now 27 years that I have been acting and very early in my career, I went through a phase that was a huge learning experience for me. The level of input that I have been putting has been the same right through but I made mistakes,” Aamir told PTI.
“So, what I am today is not just the result of my successes but also because of my failures. They taught me the most. That’s why I have been able to build my career the way I have,” he said.
Mela’s lead heroine Twinkle Khanna, who has given hits like Badshah and Barsaat, herself mocked her performance in the film. After Mela’s failure, Twinkle didn’t receive much offers and she decided to quit Bollywood altogether at 27.
Also, there were reports that director Dharmesh Darshan had a tiff with Aamir Khan after Mela’s release. He alleged that actor had pushed a sleazy scene in the film which he objected to. The director also claimed that he wanted to cast Kajol in the lead role, but the actress rejected it as she was concerned about Aamir’s habit of doing multiple takes.
