Veteran Australian actor Ruby Rose has issued a strong public critique of fellow actress Sydney Sweeney, calling her in connection with the disappointing opening‑weekend performance of the boxing biopic Christy.
In a social‑media post, Rose claimed she was originally attached to play the boxing legend at the centre of the film, Christy Martin (nicknamed “Cherry”), and said the original script had a deeply authentic cast, many of whom she says were queer and intimately familiar with the material. The post read, “The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”
She continued, “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”
Christy, a biographical sports drama film directed by David Michôd, was released in theaters on November 7, 2025. The movie tells the true story of Christy Martin, a pioneering female boxer who became the first woman to headline a boxing pay-per-view event.
