Ae Dil Hai Mushkil music review: Quirky, sexy, fun, melodious - all that in ADHM!

Karan Johar’s film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Fawad Khan, is already on its way to becoming a box office hit, thanks to the buzz created by its music. The songs, especially the title song Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a chartbuster and is on everybody’s lips and song players! Although Ae Dil Hai Mushkil the song, composed by Pritam Chakraborty, has reminded people of various other numbers including ones from Bollywood and the international rock scene, the song will definitely be remembered as the most popular from 2016. But then there is also the mesmerising song Bulleya and then the one released today – Cutiepie – which is really cute in itself! Here is what we think of the music of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil!

1. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil title song review

The second most watched song from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – the first one being Bulleya – this title song is super melodious. And even among allegations of plagiarism from various sources, the music by Pritam Chakraborty and the lovely lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya have sustained. Arijit Singh’s soulful voice, Ranbir Kapoor’s acting and the pretty music video have made this song a hit. Watch song here!

2. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil song Cutiepie review

This is the cutest song of the film! Cutiepie is about how a girl ignores her best friends or boyfriend at her own wedding, and a lot more things. It’s actually a fun song and doesn’t really have to mean anything. It’s a great song to watch, with Ranbir Kapoor at his antics at Anushka Sharma’s wedding, and also a cool song just to listen to! Do watch how the song Cutiepie ends – it will bring a smile to your face! Also, Cutiepie will be the preferred dance song from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil rather than The Breakup SongCutiepie has been composed by Pritam and written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, while the singers are Pardeep Singh Sran and Nakash Aziz. Watch song here!

3. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil song Channa Mereya review

Arijit Singh spreads magic again, but this song is a bit of a confusing number as to what it aims to be. Looking at the music video, we know that Ranbir Kapoor sings this to Anushka Sharma – his lady love – at her wedding. Although melodious and popular, again with meaningful lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, it is sad that this is the song that leads to the break-up of Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) and Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, with him showing her not one but two middle fingers! This is in frustration of his one-sided love – the premise on which the entire film is based. Watch song here!

4. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil song Bulleya review

The Sufi beauty Bulleya is the most wonderful song of the album we feel – even better than the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil title song. Not for nothing does it have over 49 million views on YouTube, while the title song of ADHM has over 42 million – less than Bulleya. The Sufi and guitar fusion is awesome, and sung well by Amit Mishra and Shilpa Rao. Visually, it is a spectacle, telling the story of Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and their initial flirting – hugs and whipped cream et al – with the former reminding us of his singer avatar from his film Rockstar. But Bulleya also has Anushka Sharma. The song is composed by Pritam and written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, with great sound design by DJ Phukan and Sunny MR. Watch song here!

5. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil‘s The Breakup Song review

This fun song celebrating a break-up begins with a tune akin to classic melodies from the black and white era of Indian movies. But The Breakup Song soon endears itself to modern listeners, too, with the voices of Jonita Gandhi, Nakash Aziz, Badshah and Arijit Singh. The quirky number composed by Pritam and written by Amitabh Bhattacharya may not be to everyone’s liking. Watch song here!

Verdict: After much brouhaha over the inclusion of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in the film and therefore a ban called on the film, all is well now and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is all set to release on October 28, 2016 in theatres all over. Enjoy the music as you watch the film! It will lift your spirits and make you feel good. Having said that, we feel the music of Ae Dil Hai Muskhil – for the kind of scale the film has – could have been a lot better or the film could have had more songs, considering the sensibilities of the typical Indian or videsi Bollywood movie watcher.

Music Rating: We’ll go with 3.5 stars out of 5 for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
