Aishwarya Rai Bachchan rose to fame in the film industry with her film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. Her debut film was a Tamil directorial by Mani Ratnam ‘Iruvar’ (1997). She also made her Bollywood debut with ‘Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya’, and since then she has done close to 51 films in a career spanning over two decades. The former Miss world not only became famous in India but got her name heard in Hollywood too. However, she had rejected Hollywood films, not one but a few. And one of them became a blockbuster with a massive box office collection.
ARB has always been particular about her scripts. Always thoughtful about her projects, she once refused a chance to work along side Brad Pitt!
Her impeccable performance had lured hearts worldwide. She was offered a role along side Brad Pitt in ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’. The ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ was supposed to play his wife Jane Smith. But, several media reports hint that she was uncomfortable with few scenes in the film and chose to go otherwise. Eventually the role was passed on to Angelina Jolie and that was the beginning of ‘Brangelina’. ‘Mr and Mrs smith’ went on to become one of the highest grossing films in 2005 with a global box office collection of over Rs 4100 crores. Did you know that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan lent her voice to Jolie’s character in ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ (2019) for the Hindi dubbed version? Life comes full circle much?
This is not the only Hollywood movie she had turned down. She also said no to the role of play Briseis, Princess of Troy, for the film ‘Troy’. However, speaking with Indian Express in an old interview she shared the real reason behind her refusal. “When ‘Troy’ was spoken about… they were saying at least 6-9 months to lock off (the schedule) because it is a huge film. But obviously, we have a way of looking at it like – this is your part… to lock off that kind of time when I had films here (in India) I was committed to, I couldn’t get myself to kick that to the curb,” she explained.
Even the Oscar winning actor Brad Pitt expressed his eagerness to work with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan owing to her sheer talent and incredible popularity in the West.
One of her most notable works in Hollywood is ‘Bride and Prejudice’ (2004), base don Jane Austen’s novel. Next she was seen in he Mistress of Spices’, based on a 1997 novel with the same title. In 2006 she starred in ‘Provoked, ‘The Last Legion’ (2007), and ‘Pink Panther 2’ (2009)
