Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival which has every sister tie a rakhi around the wrist of her brother in exchange for a promise that he will protect her for eternity. However, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha actor, Akshay Kumar has a different message for his sister and every woman in general—‘ To be your own protector’. In a video posted by the actor titled as Direct Dil Se, his sister, Alka Bhatia affectionately calls her brother, ‘Raju’, procured from his original name Rajiv Bhatia and recounts how his prudence helped her grow strong enough to take care of her own self. In the video, Alka tells how Akshay would deny to protect her, much to her annoyance, and would always tell her to be her own protector and saviour. She also narrates how after the demise of her father, 17 years ago, Akshay took charge of the family and gave her and her daughter the ‘best gift’ ever. She said, “After my father passed away 17 years ago, there was a sudden void in our lives. We didn’t realise when Raju stepped into our father’s shoes and took responsibility of the family. Despite the change, his basic ideal and philosophy of life remained the same, which is, ‘Take Care Of Your Own Self’. I never fully grasped the meaning of this, until my daughter left for America to pursue her higher studies. Needless to say, we were all stressed about it. My daughter asked, ‘Will I be able to manage?’, to which I automatically replied like Raju, ‘Bas khudka dhyan rakhna’ (Just take care of yourself). Thus, for my daughter and I, my brother has given the biggest gift, which is to be self-reliant and take care of our own selves.” Also Read - Laxxmi Bomb's Burj Khalifa Song Out: Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani Romance in Dessert, Fans Call it 'Chartbuster Hit'
She also made a funny revelation. Unlike every sister, who would be allowed to go to parties only if her brother escorted her, Alka could never get to go for any as her brother refused to accompany her, stating that she should be able to take care of herself. “I used to often get angry on Raju because he was older to me and had some responsibility. Whenever I would ask my parents if I could go for a party or an outing with friends, they would say, Take Raju along’. However, he would refuse to tag along as he would say the same thing–‘Take care of yourself’. I would thus never get to go to any parties,” Alka narrated in the video.
